How should B2B companies evaluate GEO results?

Use a fixed question set to evaluate website citations, supplier recommendations, brand descriptions and business enquiries.

Which metrics should a marketing team use to evaluate GEO?

Evaluate website citations, supplier recommendations, description accuracy and business enquiries separately. Establish a fixed question set and baseline, then repeat observations under consistent conditions. Report sample counts alongside percentages so changes can be interpreted.

Measure four types of result separately

Website citations: Check whether the answer’s sources include a company website page. Save the actual link and review which page is cited and what claim it supports. A company name appearing in an answer without a source link is recorded as a brand mention.

Supplier recommendations: For questions about finding or comparing partners, record whether the company is recommended as a suitable candidate. Preserve the reason and check whether it matches the company’s actual business.

Description accuracy: Check positioning, services, suitable customers and cases against a reviewed brand fact sheet. If an answer provides no relevant facts, record it as not assessable.

Business outcomes: Determine whether relevant visits lead to enquiries, qualified needs or opportunities. Preserve both website referral evidence and the customer’s own account of how they found you. Some people visit directly after reading an AI answer, so referral links alone cannot capture every journey.

Build a question set around business decisions

Questions should reflect actual customer decisions. A manufacturing marketing team might ask, “How can we market complex industrial products through content?” At the selection stage, it might ask, “How do we choose a B2B marketing agency that understands industrial markets?”

Group questions into learning methods, applying them to situations, selecting suppliers and checking brand facts. Brand-verification questions can include the company name. Questions testing natural discovery should preserve the way customers normally ask. Report these groups separately to distinguish active brand searches from new-customer discovery.

Map each question to a primary page: methods to knowledge articles, service selection to solution pages, delivery evidence to cases, and company identity to the about page. Each page should answer directly, with conditions and evidence.

Keep conditions consistent and preserve original records

For each platform, record the test date, exact question, visible model or mode, web-search status, complete answer and citation links. Use a new conversation to reduce the influence of previous messages. Repeat the same question and treat the results as samples under specific conditions.

List access failures, rate limits and missing records separately. A successful answer that does not mention the company can be recorded as a non-mention. This keeps technical failures from being mistaken for declining brand performance.

Use interpretable denominators

The following are proposed project measurement definitions:

Metric Calculation Interpretation
Website citation rate Valid answers with a company website source link ÷ all valid answers Citations within this question set and test conditions
Supplier recommendation rate Selection answers recommending the company ÷ valid selection answers Applies to supplier-selection questions
Brand description accuracy Assessable answers whose relevant facts all match the reviewed fact sheet ÷ assessable answers Report individual errors as well as the aggregate
Qualified enquiries Enquiries that meet mutually agreed relevance criteria Preserve attribution evidence and limitations separately

For example, if a platform produces 40 valid answers and 8 cite the website, report “8/40, 20%.” This is a calculation example, not a measured result for any company. Preserve the distribution of question categories. Mark changes to the question set so they do not silently enter the same trend.

Turn observations into improvement actions

If brand descriptions are inaccurate, check consistency in company naming, service scope and page content. If content is cited but the company rarely appears in supplier recommendations, examine whether audience fit, delivery scope and case evidence support a selection decision. If enquiries have poor fit, review the audience attracted by the content and the needs captured at the contact step.

When citations increase, inspect the sources: which pages recur, which questions they answer and whether they support the answer accurately. Microsoft’s AI Performance guidance distinguishes citation activity from ranking and authority. A project report should therefore avoid treating citation counts as proof of market leadership. Check the website foundations

Make important content available as text, connect pages through real links and align technical access settings with the intended publication status. Google’s AI search guidance retains SEO fundamentals and states that meeting requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or display. That guidance applies to Google. Doubao, DeepSeek, Yuanbao and Qianwen require separate observation. Google guidance

Establish a baseline first. After substantive content or website changes, repeat the assessment on an agreed schedule. Use a stable question set to observe trends, while recording new customer questions to expand knowledge content and case evidence.
